GET TO KNOW MATT
Matt has been an artist for as long as he can remember. From the moment he could hold a pencil, he showed an uncanny ability to reproduce imagery. At just two years old, he drew his first animal portrait—a startlingly accurate Blue Jay from memory. By third grade, he was copying video game art from magazines, sharpening his ability to reference and recreate detailed images.
At age 10, inspired by his Uncle Jimmy (a gifted artist who also started young), Matt tackled his first realistic pencil drawing: a portrait of a Native American captured by photographer Edward Curtis. That moment marked a turning point—Matt knew he had found his calling.
At fifteen, Matt was accepted into the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, with a full-ride scholarship based on his artistic and academic achievements. After graduating in 2010, he attended NYU Steinhardt for a year before beginning his journey into tattooing. In January 2014, he began his formal apprenticeship under tattooer Peter Slivkanch at Blood and Iron Tattoo in Greeley, CO.
With nearly 30 years of artistic experience and over a decade of tattooing under his belt, Matt has done it all. His work spans from hyper-realistic black and grey portraits to bold, vibrant “New Age” American Traditional styles. His art is deeply influenced by his Colorado roots and his passion for fly fishing.
For the past seven years, Matt worked on Colorado's Western Slope—five years at White Lodge Tattoo and two at his own studio, Anvil Point Tattoo. He recently relocated with his wife Jackie and daughter Ashlynn to Evergreen, Colorado, where he tattoos alongside the talented crew at Black Sage Studio.
